Teen Rag Speak

I can’t believe that I have pierced ears for the first time in over ten years, and I can’t believe David Foster Wallace hung himself.

Here are puppies being sung to sleep.

My friend Gabi and I are working on launching a plus-size fashion blog, and while, ahem, researching, I found this post where 20 fashion bloggers post their favorite first date outfits. The blurbs from some of the women about their own clothing choices had me laughing at the flatlining narrative arc of human history, in which Victorian values transcend all space and time, forevs (I guess you win, Wendy Shalit). Check out these slices of conflicted American femininity:

“This red blouse shows my flirty side. Underneath, a simple dress, which I’ve belted, gives my lanky figure a little more oompf. I’ve picked some peep-toe oxfords; they’re not too va-va-voom, make your legs look good and are comfortable to walk in–because who knows where the night may lead!”

(I know that I have a fundamentally slutty core because my only response to this is that all shoes are equally as comfortable when you are lying on your back.)

This bold dress makes me feel pretty without showing too much skin.

The first-date look is all about striking the perfect balance: You should look coquettish but not tarty, casual but not schlumpy, elegant but playful.

I always go for feminine style, since it’s the most beautiful thing to be a woman!

(Really? The most? In the whole world?)

My mind is my best asset, and I want boys to see that first.

This dress is free flowing, so if I eat to much, I won’t have to worry about my belly showing! And if my date doesn’t keep me warm, I have my great grandmother’s scarf to cuddle up in.

(This one is my personal fav. So much in so little.)

I have never really thought all that hard about what to wear around dudes specifically (do they even notice?), but maybe these hens are onto something. What do I know; the last first date I went on ended with me saying, “We are never going to sleep together. Ever. You need to stop asking me that.”
