I was pondering all the terminally uncool squares out there on the internet earlier (“Courtney Love is the widow yeah. And while she’s thought of as a villein by a lot of people out there, she’s really a very gifted artist.”), and was reminded of this cultural artifact from a while ago:My friend Paul twisted my arm into watching Quarterlife (ie suggested it) when it first came out. It’s like a really dumb alternate Myspace, linked to a melodrama series broadcast on the internet. Whatever, it was like MSCL Redux. And Brian Krakow wrote most of the episodes! But each time I went to go watch a new installment, I couldn’t help but be alarmed by the surreal interactions between the fictional characters of the show and…ostensibly real persons.
They, uh…they like, addressed the characters on this schlocky drama like they were dimensional, dynamic human beings. They left them comments and video responses, and they almost never acknowledged that the characters they were addressing existed only on a stage, while they, themselves existed in material reality (unless I wasn’t in on some elaborate inside joke: possible).Straight up, it was creepy. This is not akin to some immersion into fantasy Manga land where tenticles meet teenage pussy. This was immersion into an alternate, but equally mundane and angsty world of paying rent and sexual disappointments. What is wrong with all of you?I’m talking comments such as,

It’s not your fault. If you want to put the blame on someone, look at Danny.

Brittany is an idiot. She should’ve been fired for what she did to you! SHe is a bully and has gotten others to do her work! I would sabotage the project since she calims she thought of it. When she turns in sub par work she won admit that you have been doing her job! So she will get fired! Then you can start the project your way!

“It was Good to listen to you, being honest about yourself…

hahaha :D I would like to be a friend of your’s when I know you more :)

WHO ROLE PLAYS A MORE BORING VERSION OF THEIR OWN LIFE?!!?!@#!!! Except then also plays themselves? And does not understand the difference between the text and the context? And relates personal information to figures they implicitly understand to be not real, yet seem to have some sort of dellusional expectation of a response? And how is this not just a small pool of super-fans, but almost the entirety of their considerably large participating audience? Is this like some giant murder mystery dinner party for twits?

It was so metaphysically and psychologically complex that I still can’t even begin to understand it. Some day I will write an academic paper studying this website that will give cogent form to exactly what snobs mean when they refer to the “post-modern condition.” It will be the definitive study on how the internet was the final push we needed to supplant all human interaction with hyper-stimulating new media. THE FUTR IS NOW.

ps: I googled the title of this post and NOBODY HAS EVER SAID IT BEFORE ON THE INTERNET, which means I’m a hilarious highbrow genius, and also that said academic paper will be entitled this, and also I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO NEVER LET YOU USE IT BECAUSE IT’S MY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FOREVER NOW!!!!

pps: For future birthday reference, all I have ever wanted out of life was to live in the movie Clue. Ergo, murder mystery dinner party is a sound investment of your time. I demand to be Ms. White.
